Located in the heart of the city, The Piano is a world-class facility for New Zealand and a home for music and the arts in Canterbury.
The state of the art facilities at The Piano are suitable for a range of public and private events.
The Philip Carter Family Concert Hall is a 327-seat, raised-stage auditorium, with acoustics designed to enhance presentations to the fullest. The auditorium is fully soundproofed and wired for the latest in lighting and audio/visual technologies.
The Atrium is a double height foyer, and serves as an entrance to The Concert Hall as well as a supporting function space. It has a grand piano in a recessed acoustic shell making it suitable as a jazz bar, as well as for pre- and post-show functions. The Atrium is available for hire as a separate space and is suitable for receptions, launches, corporate and private functions.
Our stunning building at 156 Armagh Street was officially opened in September 2016. Its copper-clad curves and architectural details are inspired by the shapes of a grand piano, giving our premise a musical theme which is also reflected in our name, The Piano.
Our Te Reo Maori is PÄ«pÄ«wharauroa: Kui-kui whitiwhiti ora. PÄ«pÄ«wharauroa means "the shining cuckoo", which is a bird of significance for NgÄi TÅ«Ähuriri. Not only are pÄ«pÄ«wharauroa known as singers, entertainers and conveyors of messages, they're also viewed as a sign of spring and new beginnings.
