International Men's Day (IMD) is celebrated on 19 November every year and is marked in around 80 countries worldwide.

The objectives of celebrating an International Men's Day include focusing on men's and boys' health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.

IMD is a great opportunity to take part in a global conversation about manhood, masculinity and men's issues by:

Melbourne Highlighting some of the social issues that men and boys face
Melbourne Making a difference for the men and boys in your community
Melbourne Celebrating men and boys in all their diversity
Melbourne Having some serious fun in the process.

History of International Men's Day

The International Men's Day date, which is not officially recgnised by UN, coincides with the birthday of Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh's father, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh is a doctor from Trinidad and Tobago, who relaunched International Men's Day in the year 1999. It were the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, who first observed International Men's Day. Speaking about the day, Dr Jerome had said, "They are striving for gender equality and patiently attempt to remove the negative images and the stigma associated with men in our society".

Supporting Men and Boys

International Men's Day will be marked on Wednesday 19 November 2025, with this year's Australian theme: "Supporting Men and Boys."

One of the key aims of International Men's Day is to highlight some of the social issues that men and boys face, from boys struggling at school to men struggling with their mental health.

This year, we're encouraging communities across Australia to celebrate and elevate those making a positive impact. Whether it's local men's groups, mentors, or role models, let's recognise the people and initiatives that are truly "Supporting Men and Boys."

On a personal level, this theme is a timely reminder to consider how you can support the men and boys in your life. It could be something as simple as checking in on a mate, reaching out to a family member, or lending a hand to a young person who needs guidance.

If you're part of a local business, community group or organisation, consider hosting an International Men's Day event focused on this year's theme. Whether it's a morning tea, a speaker panel, or a fundraising initiative, every action counts in creating a more supportive environment for men and boys.

We also know that governments at all levels can play a stronger role in addressing the challenges facing men and boys. For those involved in men's health advocacy, International Men's Day is a powerful opportunity to call on policymakers to prioritise these issues and show meaningful commitment.

We encourage more Members of Parliament to actively support the day-whether through public statements, local events, or community engagement-demonstrating their dedication to "Supporting Men and Boys" in their electorates.

Be part of the conversation

As always, International Men's Day is a great opportunity to take part in a global conversation about manhood, masculinity and men's issues.

There are a wide variety of ways you can mark International Men's Day, regardless of whether you choose to focus on this year's "Supporting Men and Boys" theme or not.

As a general rule, the majority of celebrations share one or more of the following objectives:

Valuing male role models
Acknowledging the contribution of men and boys
Improving male health
Tackling discrimination and disadvantage
Fostering positive gender relations
Making the world a safer place for everyone
